Light Emitting Diodes are Energy Efficient and Long Lasting

The world of lighting continues to offer businesses and homeowners new choices. As energy costs fly off like a hot air balloon, new innovations come to the marketplace. First came the incandescent bulb, thanks to Thomas Edison. In fact, many homes and businesses are lit exclusively with incandescent lighting to this very day. But wait! There are better alternatives.
Low voltage lighting started showing up in exterior applications such as landscaping. The obvious migration to home interiors was inevitable. Halogen bulbs showed promises but they are problematic for some applications. They generate far too much heat and are very fragile.
Compact fluorescent bulbs — known as CFLs —arrived too and expanded the possibilities for efficient home and business lighting. Problems arrived now though. Having lighted homes and businesses for more than a decade, they are running into resistance from waste industry officials and some environmental scientists. They warn us that the bulbs’ poisonous innards pose a bigger threat to health and the environment than previously thought.
In spite of the fact that the bulbs are very energy-efficient, all CFLs contain mercury, a neurotoxin that can cause kidney and brain damage. The amount is tiny — about 5 milligrams, or barely enough to cover the tip of a pen — but that is enough to contaminate up to 6.000 gallons of water beyond safe drinking levels. Even the latest lamps promoted as “low-mercury” can contaminate more than 1.000 gallons of water beyond safe levels.
As long as the mercury is contained in the bulb, CFLs are perfectly safe. But eventually, any bulbs — even CFLs — break or burn out, and most consumers simply throw them out in the trash.
The time had come for LED lights!
LED lighting falls into the SSL lighting category (Solid State Lighting). This simply means that the light seen is emitted from a solid object, rather than a vacuum or a gas.
