Light Emitting Diodes are Energy Efficient and Long Lasting
Light Emitting Diodes are Energy Efficient and Long Lasting LED lighting is an emerging technology with many home and business applications such as LED bulbs, LED spotlights, LED PAR lights, LED tubes, and LED streetlights. LED lighting solutions generally last over 50.000 hours.
The world of lighting continues to offer businesses and homeowners new choices. As energy costs fly off like a hot air balloon, new innovations come to the marketplace. As far as business and home lighting is concerned, new strides are being made not only in energy efficiency, but also in long lasting product lives. And, not by any chance, these are just the benefits of LED lighting.
First came the incandescent bulb, thanks to Thomas Edison. In fact, many homes and businesses are lit exclusively with incandescent lighting to this very day. But wait! There are better alternatives.
Low voltage lighting started showing up in exterior applications such as landscaping. The obvious migration to home interiors was inevitable. Halogen bulbs showed promises but they are problematic for some applications. They generate far too much heat and are very fragile.
Compact fluorescent bulbs — known as CFLs —arrived too and expanded the possibilities for efficient home and business lighting. Problems arrived now though. Having lighted homes and businesses for more than a decade, they are running into resistance from waste industry officials and some environmental scientists. They warn us that the bulbs’ poisonous innards pose a bigger threat to health and the environment than previously thought.
In spite of the fact that the bulbs are very energy-efficient, all CFLs contain mercury, a neurotoxin that can cause kidney and brain damage. The amount is tiny — about 5 milligrams, or barely enough to cover the tip of a pen — but that is enough to contaminate up to 6.000 gallons of water beyond safe drinking levels. Even the latest lamps promoted as “low-mercury” can contaminate more than 1.000 gallons of water beyond safe levels.
As long as the mercury is contained in the bulb, CFLs are perfectly safe. But eventually, any bulbs — even CFLs — break or burn out, and most consumers simply throw them out in the trash.
The time had come for LED lights!
LED lighting falls into the SSL lighting category (Solid State Lighting). This simply means that the light seen is emitted from a solid object, rather than a vacuum or a gas.
| Energy efficiency |
LED lights burn very efficient. While incandescent bulbs emit 98 percent of their energy as heat, LED has an efficacy of more than 80 percent! |
| Long life |
LED lights can last up to 50.000 hours. Incandescent light bulbs typically last around 1.000 hours and fluorescents are good for roughly 10.000 hours.
|
| Rugged durability |
LED lights have no fragile filament to contend with, and no fragile tube. They are resistant to heat, cold, and shock. |
| No UR and IR radiation |
LED lighting does not radiate any UV or IR wavelengths. This can be important for people with sensitive skins, displaying colorful merchandise like clothing or vegetables, protecting vulnerable art objects or keeping badly ventilated spaces healthy. |
| Low stock, low maintenance |
Business wise it can be important that there’s hardly a stock of lamps needed and maintenance hours can be cut back rigorously because LED lighting lasts up to 50.000 hours. |
Modern LED lighting offered by MTC LED Solutions is compatible with almost every system. Some models screw in, replacing incandescents. Others can replace halogen bulbs, PAR lights, tube lights or even streetlights.
